Things to do in Colombia

Wander Through the Colourful Streets of Salento

Begin your Colombian adventure in Salento, a vibrant town where every street feels like a postcard. Stroll past rows of brightly painted houses, their balconies overflowing with flowers and life. Step into artisan shops, chat with friendly locals, and let the rhythm of the coffee region pull you in. Don’t miss Calle Real, where the scent of freshly brewed coffee drifts through the air and the atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and effortlessly welcoming.

Hike Among the Towering Wax Palms of Cocora Valley

One of Colombia’s most iconic landscapes awaits just beyond Salento. Lace up your boots and venture into the Cocora Valley, where the world’s tallest palm trees rise dramatically from rolling green hills. The trail leads you across wooden bridges, through cloud-kissed forests, and into open meadows that feel almost otherworldly. Take your time, the altitude may slow your pace, but every turn reveals a new, breathtaking view.

Indulge in Colombia’s Coffee Culture

No visit to the region is complete without experiencing its coffee heritage. Join a tour at a local finca, where you’ll learn how beans are grown, harvested, and roasted. Sip the freshest cup of your life while chatting with the farmers who pour their heart into every harvest. It’s a simple moment, but one that stays with you.

Taste Your Way Through Salento’s Food Scene

From hearty bandeja paisa to creamy aguapanela and fresh trout grilled straight from the river, Salento offers a delicious mix of flavours. Stop by a family-run eatery where the owner might share stories of the valley as you eat, these unplanned conversations often become the highlight of the day.

Catch the Sunset Over Mirador de Salento

End your day with a short climb to Mirador de Salento, a viewpoint overlooking endless hills and patchwork farms. As the sun sets, the sky glows gold over the coffee fields below. It’s the perfect blend of serenity and adventure, a moment to simply sit, breathe, and take in the beauty of Colombia’s coffee region.

What to Pack for Salento & Cocora Valley

Layered, Lightweight Clothing: The weather in Salento swings between warm sun and sudden mist, especially in Cocora Valley. Pack layers you can peel on and offlight thermals, a fleece, and a waterproof shell. Morning hikes can feel chilly, and the fog rolls in fast. I once started a trek in bright sun and ended it wrapped in a jacket under light rain, Colombia loves surprises.

Comfortable Hiking Shoes: Trails here range from soft forest mud to uneven, rooty paths. Bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Waterproof is a bonus, especially if you’re crossing small streams or doing the longer valley loop.

Camera or Phone Kit: Cocora’s wax palms are taller than you expect, you’ll want photos. Bring extra batteries or a power bank; sunrise in the valley and late afternoons in town both make incredible photo moments.

Daypack Essentials: A small backpack is perfect for water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. If you’re doing food tours in Salento, leave some space; you’ll probably end up carrying coffee beans or pastries you couldn’t resist.

Travel Adapter & Charger: Colombia uses Type A/B outlets. Bring a universal adapter and a portable charger for long days out.

Cash for Local Eats: Many small eateries and food stalls, especially those serving arepas, patacones, or fresh trout, are cash-only. Keep small bills handy for snacks and tips when meeting locals along the way.
